Having acquired the building in 2019, Lazari committed to a renovation and upgrade. Its brief for MoreySmith was a bold and innovative intervention to elevate the building’s street presence, create a memorable arrival experience and provide best in class reception for London.
The design re-imagines the traditional reception area. The introduction of the Hera Bar provides a focal point and transforms the space into a vibrant social hub — an inviting, flexible area for collaborating, socialising and unwinding beyond office hours. Soft materials, furnishings and rugs, ensure a comfortable and acoustically balanced interior and invite users to linger and enjoy the space.
In the atrium, a double-storey pod now extends across two tenant floors, introducing an internal balcony on the third. From this vantage point, visitors can take in views of the Hera Bar below and Daniel Chadwick’s striking 17-metre-high wall sculpture opposite.
MoreySmith extended the façade beyond its original line, not only enhancing the building’s visual presence but also improving functionality and street-level engagement. The design pays homage to the mid-19th-century arcade fronts, but adds a contemporary asymmetry.
The transformed space features three specially commissioned artworks curated with Patrick Morey-Burrows of ArtSource. In the right-hand window is Zachary Eastwood-Bloom’s marble sculpture, Hera, the Greek goddess of family. Daniel Chadwick’s wall-hung sculpture in the atrium, The Temple of Hera, is inspired by the topography of Mount Olympus. And integrated into the bespoke concrete panelling is SASSE/SLUICE by Kate MccGwire, a piece crafted from thousands of pigeon feathers and symbolizing renewal central.
Lazari and MoreySmith shared a commitment to sustainable design, adapting existing assets for longevity and favouring evolution over replacement. Original building features are preserved and enhanced. Sustainability guided every aspect of the project, from material selection to construction methods and operational design.
Nicholas Lazari, director at Lazari, said: “We have always prioritised being a customer-focused business, partnering closely with our clients to deliver tailored solutions that enhance productivity and happiness in the workplace. As the bifurcation of the office market continues, we continue to lead by offering premium spaces, amenities, and experiences for our tenants.
The significant upgrade to the entrance and reception areas reflects our intention to bring hotel-level hospitality, experience and atmosphere to the space.
“MoreySmith’s aesthetic sensibility, attention to detail and deep industry expertise made them the perfect partner to bring these ambitions to life and they are worthy winners of this UK-wide design award.”
