A modernist London icon reimagined

Originally built in 1965 and inspired by New York’s Lever Building, The Met Building has been transformed through a comprehensive redevelopment completed in September 2023. This refurbishment, undertaken at a Capex cost of £30 million, reimagined the building’s timeless architectural design while integrating modern innovations and sustainability features.

The building consists of a four-storey podium topped by a 12-storey tower and a newly constructed rooftop level. This 13th-floor rooftop lounge includes a communal bar, kitchen, and retractable roof, offering spectacular views across London. The refurbishment repurposed 113,835 sq ft of prime office and retail space, with 47,263 sq ft NIA in the podium levels and 40,481 sq ft NIA in the tower. By choosing to repurpose rather than demolish, carbon emissions were reduced by 40% and over 4,000 sq ft of outdoor terraces were introduced to create a vibrant and sustainable workplace.

The redesigned Met Building also features an expansive podium reception, a dramatic spiral staircase connecting office floors to rooftop terraces, and enhanced amenities. A notable letting to Avison Young spans 38,000 sq ft of the podium level’s 47,000 sq ft total. Other occupiers include Aggregate, Wiggin LLP, GML Capital, HSBC, Superdrug, and NatWest.

The Met Building is a testament to the value of sustainability, design excellence, and the art of reimagining an iconic structure for the future.
